The Road to Hachimantai

Hachimantai is the tallest mountain in Akita prefecture, and actually straddles the border with Iwate prefecture to the east. It is a shield volcano with a lot of geothermal activity, and the highest peak is 1560 meters (5118 feet) above sea level. Visiting Hachimantai was the whole reason we rented a car; there is no railroad that goes there.

Stefanie took this photo as we drove up the mountain road. (That hill straight ahead is not the highest peak.)
