Akitanairikujūkantetsudō

Try saying that five times fast! It literally means the Akita Interior North-South Railway, and it's a narrow gauge railway that, surprise, runs north and south through the middle of Akita prefecture. The trains themselves are tiny, often just one car. The stations are so small because there's no need for turnstyles or station managers. Instead, you pay the driver as you get off, just like a bus.

Although there is a main road that runs through the same part of the prefecture, there are many tunnels and steep mountain valleys that give the impression of going to some secret, magical place.
