Ōnuma Pond in the Mist

The "lake" in the name Hachimantai Lake Inn is this wetland pond. The name translates literally as "Big Wetland Pond".

The afternoon we got there was rather foggy, which gave the whole area an isolated feeling. The entire area has a lot of steam venting from the ground, plus the altitude put us inside of clouds from time to time.

The wetland pond is fed by clear mountain streams of snowmelt, and there was still plenty of snow yet to melt on the northern slopes of the hills and valleys.
