Kumabokujou

We spent Stefanie's birthday in Ani Matagi, deep in the mountains of central Akita Prefecture and original home of the Akita dog breed. Matagi hunters bred Akita dogs to hunt in male/female pairs. They mostly hunted Japanese serow and bears such as this "Tsukinowaguma."

In Ani Matagi, there is a bear zoo called "Kumabokujou," where you can see and feed the bears. There is also a tourism center with ryokan, and onsen where you can eat the bears. They're not very tasty, rather like tough, fishy meat.
