JR Hachiko Shrine

Ōdate, the second largest city in Akita prefecture, is famous as the birthplace of Hachiko. The city is proud of its Akita dog heritage (the Akita breed used to be called the "Ōdate Dog") and is home to the Akita Dog Museum.

Inside Ōdate station, JR built this shrine to Hachiko on platform 1. This elegant shrine is immediately next to a giant plywood cutout of a Hinai-jidori (special tasty chicken of Akita) with the face cut out so you can get your own photo as a giant chicken.
