Kids on the Bus

To get to Akinomiya, we had to take a tiny train out to a tiny station, where we caught a bus out into the countryside. At about the time we vocalized the thought that we were now on "the road less traveled", the bus turned onto an even smaller road. Then it picked up these schoolkids.

They boarded the bus chattering like schoolkids, but quickly noticed the gaikokujin (foreigners) in the back of the bus. This resulted in a flurry of energetic (and loud) whispering behind their hands, "gaikokujin! Gaikokujin!". So Matthew said, "konnichi-wa," leading to more excited whispering. Then they all came charging back to where we were on the bus to chat with us and touch Matthew's hair.
